every generation of technology there are control mechanisms that are implemented with some combination of evolving whatever had worked before and mixing in whatever was possible at the time. once a solution is found, it can take a very long time for anybody to recompile along a different technology stack. there's a lot in cars like this, internal combustion engines etc
